Doubt doesn’t ever have to be a two-way street. 

The person doing the doubting of another individual is lacking somewhere. There’s a hole in their heart. They’re trying to fill it by bringing someone else down to their own decrepit block, begging them, through all types of hateful words, to get trapped on that miserable street. 

That’s where self-belief can have a word. It can turn the doubter’s two-way street into a dead end. And then it can put an Olympic-sized ramp on top of a gymnast-level trampoline in that dead-end and the doubted can rocket off into the stars. 

That’s exactly what Isaiah Thomas did with the Boston Celtics. He launched himself high over the numerous doubters, haters and skeptics to land in a place where his game will be remembered forever.  

He refused to allow his “Mr. Irrelevant” nickname, given to him because he was the 60th and final pick in the 2011 draft, to stick. The 5-9 point guard believed in himself enough to average nearly 30 points a game in the NBA. 

Read it again. 

At 5-9, Isaiah Thomas averaged nearly 30 points a game over the course of an entire NBA season. 

Anything is possible. 

SLAM 208 dropped just after the King in the Fourth had sucker punched the whole League with a barrage of off-the-bounce jumpers, photon-quick drives to the rim and unbelievable clutch performances. He was the Celtics’ entire offense that season. Everything was geared to allow this spiritual giant to flourish as much as possible.
